Course Description

This 8-hour webinar emphasizes key considerations applicable to the physical and occupational therapist in effectively managing patients with pulmonary diseases. Disease processes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, restrictive lung disease, pneumonia and deep  vein thrombosis/ pulmonary emboli will be presented with specific reference to  its etiology, pathology, and current medical management. Focused examination and evaluation  strategies, organized clinical decision making, goal writing, documentation and  current evidenced-based treatment techniques will be emphasized to provide clinicians with a contemporary best practice approach for managing patients with pulmonary diseases.  

Course Objectives

  1. Recognize three important radiographic characteristics in patients with COPD. 
  2. Given the findings of an evaluation for a patient with pulmonary disease, the  participant will integrate three common treatment activities into a treatment  session. 
  3. Select  and provide rationale for utilization of three examination techniques for  patients with pulmonary disease in an effort to establish a PT/OT diagnosis and  plan of care. 
  4. Identify  and assess three appropriate functional outcome measures in the management of  patients with pulmonary diseases.

Part One     

Hour 1       Obstructive vs. Restrictive Pulmonary  Disease: Pathophysiological Considerations 

Hour 2       Assessment of Medical Record (Pulmonary Function Tests, Arterial Blood Gases, Chest Radiographs)

Hour 3       Contemporary Considerations in  Managing Patients with Pneumonia

Part Two

Hour 1       Examination Techniques: Pulse oximetry, Oxygen Supplementation, Dynamic Hyperinflation 

Hour 2       Examination Techniques: Inspiratory Strength, Functional outcome measures

Hour 3       Evaluation, Development of a Problem List, Documentation, Goals

Hour 4       Pulmonary Interventions (Breathing, Aerobic Exercise, Interval Training, Strength Training, Inspiratory Muscle Training, NMES)

Hour 5       Management of Patients with  DVT/ PE (Review of Clinical Practice Guidelines)
